Elements of a Great Logo

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

If you are designing the logo for your company there are many elements you need to include so you can successfully create a brand for your business. Logos need to be very distinctive, work well with your company name, easy to read, and a strong balanced image.

If you are designing a logo for your online business it is important to design something very recognizable. When users come to your site you want to be sure they remember you when they leave. When you have a logo that is distinctive they will know it is you every time they see the logo. This way when you get your logo around the Internet, it will be your online company they associate when they see your logo. Every business needs a very distinct logo to be successful online competing against the other 20 million websites.

Your logo needs to work well with your company name and what you are all about. If you sell artificial Christmas trees then the logo should be similar to your product. You don’t want a logo that shows a milkshake or something else because no one will have any idea that you sell artificial Christmas trees and it won’t match with your company. If you choose to throw a tag line underneath your logo then it is also important to associate it with artificial Christmas trees or whichever product or service you sell. Make sense when you design your logo so people understand where you are coming from.

It is very common for companies to design logos that look really neat but it may take a few minutes to comprehend what the company name is. This is because they use fonts that are very difficult to read. When you design your company logo it is important to use a font that is easy to read. There are hundreds of fonts to choose from. Don’t try to be too glamorous or the logo will not be readable. Just because you know what it says doesn’t mean everyone else can. Go easy and basic with the font you use on the font you choose for your company.

Font is also important because if you have a basic text on your site with your logo or company name in it in a strange font like Old English then users will not be able to read it too. Most users have the basic fonts installed on their computers. Most people don’t know how to add a new font to their system also. When you use a font that is hard to find, you have to purchase, or install on your computer you can be guaranteed that the users will not be able to view the logo. It may display in symbols or they will get an error message on their screen.

There are many elements to designing a good logo for an online business. A few things to consider include the type of font you use to design your logo, making it distinct and recognizable across the web, and making sense with your company name and the products you sell.
